My Top 5 Dishes from The Top 10 Makassar Culinary Icons

The City of Makassar has just launched The Top 10 Culinary Icons in Makassar. The 10 selected dishes are taken based on a research with 2.109 respondents in Makassar and some other major cities in Indonesia. The dishes which made it into top ten are Coto Makassar at the top position, followed by Pallu Basa, Sop Saudara,  Sop Konro, Pallumara, Pisang Epe, Konro Bakar, Jalang Kote, Mie Kering, and Pisang Ijo. Sounds delicious? Yes!

If you happen to travel to Makassar someday, trying the local foods is a must! They are all easy to find as it available in many food stalls and restaurants in the city. I myself - for sure- have tried the top 10 picks and can guarantee the taste! But below are my top 5 favorite dishes that you shouldn’t miss from the top 10:

#1 Coto Makassar
Mostly for local people, Coto Makassar is the best breakfast ever. Coto Makassar is a seasoning broth made of ground peanuts with beef and some inner parts of the cow, such as intestine, liver, lung, brain, and tounge. Usually it’s served with rice cake wrapped in banana or pandan leaf (burasa’ or ketupat). For some people, eating Coto Makassar is just a challenge.

#2 Sop Saudara
Sop Saudara is a beef soup with laksa noodle and potato fritter (perkedel). In some restaurants, Sop Saudara is served with grilled milk fish and boiled egg.

#3 Sop Konro
For the ribs lover, Konro is the best choice. It mostly ribs or spareribs in a hot fried-ground-coconut soup. It’s very rich with freshly ground spice. To enjoy Sop Konro, a plate of rice would be a nice staple.

#4 Jalangkote
Jalangkote is a fried pastry filled with vegetables (carrot, potato, and bean sprouts), minced beef and, sometimes, slices of boiled egg. It’s not a main dished, but snacks. Or, some people consider it as a starter before the main course. In other cities in Indonesia, it’s known as pastel.

#5 Pisang Ijo
For those who always have space for dessert, Pisang Ijo should be a good one. It’s a sweet banana rolled in a green dough and serve with a condense coconut sauce. To make it taste perfect, a red sweet syrup would be a nice combination. Pisang ijo is a typical dish during Ramadhan or fasting month. But in the city, it’s available anytime now!

That's all my top picks from starter to dessert. What's your top 5 dishes?
